Can toothpaste cause cancer ? – Sounds most unlikely doesn’t it.
The idea that the pleasant, sweet and minty, foaming toothpaste you use every morning and evening could be harmful in any way seems almost ridiculous.
Surely, most toothpaste is made by large responsible corporations, who work tirelessly to produce the very best dental care products that money can buy? At least, that’s the impression we get from the toothpaste adverts, where everyone is young and beautiful with sparkling white teeth. No wonder they can’t stop smiling.
First thing in the morning, you stumble into the bathroom while half asleep, and reach for your toothbrush and the tube of regular toothpaste… it’s an almost robotic action, and you probably don’t give much thought to whether the toothpaste ingredients in your mouth are actually harmful.
So – with all that in mind, why are you now asking the question – Can toothpaste cause cancer ?
And why should you worry? You give your mouth a quick rinse out and sometimes a sluice from your bottle of mouthwash.
You run your tongue around your teeth, and everything feels clean with a minty tangy aftertaste.
All good for a new day…

Can Toothpaste Cause Cancer ?
Before We Start – Here’s Another Hazard
While we’re considering potential damage to your teeth, gums and general health – are you using toothpaste that promises to whiten your teeth?
Almost certainly, this type of toothpaste will contain something that feels a little gritty and scratchy.
Anything abrasive you brush onto your teeth twice a day is eventually going to scour away your tooth enamel.
Tooth enamel is irreplaceable – when it’s gone, it’s gone.
Here Are Some Toothpaste Ingredients
Do You Really Want Chemicals in Your Mouth?
FLUORIDE
Fluoride is a chemical that has been steeped in controversy for years.
It is absorbed by the human body through the digestive system, where it makes its way into the blood, and ultimately accumulates in areas high in calcium, such as your bones and teeth.
Dental associations the world over, including the American Dental Association (ADA), recommend the use of fluoride toothpaste for men women and children of all ages – and to start smearing it on when the first infant tooth arrives.
Fluoride is supposed to prevent cavities, but the main culprit is almost certainly sugar, which is generously supplied in almost all processed food and drink.
We like the taste of sugar, so food manufacturers give us plenty of it. Sugar boosts sales, so it’s very tempting to add plenty. Even processed savoury food contains sugar. Check the labelling, and you’ll see what I mean.
Can toothpaste cause cancer ? Although clinical studies have shown that fluoride has triggered cancer in rats, no conclusive proof has been found that it produces cancer in humans.
However, the fact that fluoride is carcinogenic in some animals, in certain circumstances, should be a warning for humans not to be complacent.
Nobody can say conclusively that fluoride is not carcinogenic, but it is still wholeheartedly recommended as a completely safe toothpaste ingredient by people prepared to ignore the potential risk to your health.
TRICLOSAN
Triclosan is an anti-bacterial cleaning agent, which is an ingredient in some regular toothpastes on sale in supermarkets and pharmacies. Also used in dishwashing liquid and handwash, this chemical has been found by researchers to react with water to produce chloroform gas.
If inhaled in large enough amounts, chloroform can cause a range of health problems in humans, including (but not limited to) depression, liver disorders and, in some cases, cancer.
This is a chemical you would definitely want to avoid at all costs. Adding it to water (which produces chloroform) and putting it in your mouth twice a day, sounds like asking for trouble!
It’s another example of manufacturers wanting to achieve a result, but not doing sufficient research, or caring too much about the potential health outcomes for the people who buy their products…
You should avoid this poisonous chemical to protect your health, and the health of members of your family.
Can toothpaste cause cancer ? In the case of Triclosan, there is clear evidence that toothpaste containing this poison is potentially carcinogenic.
PROPYLENE GLYCOL
A number of regular toothpastes contain propylene glycol.
This chemical is often used as an anti-freeze and it’s kept at airports to de-ice aircraft during severe weather conditions.
Propylene Glycol is a by-product of the petrochemical industry and it’s made from fossil fuels during the oil refining process.
Propylene Glycol is known to be a skin irritant that can badly affect skin and mucous membranes…
Although it’s not currently known whether PG is carcinogenic, when swallowed it increases acidity levels to the point where it can cause metabolic acidosis.
Although digestive acidity is not necessarily a cause of cancer, it’s well known that cancer thrives in an acidic environment.
One of the nutritional anti-cancer procedures requires patience to eat foods that create an alkaline environment in the body.
It’s unlikely that large doses of Propylene Glycol will be ingested from your toothpaste.
However, it’s impossible to say what damage will be caused over the years by ingesting small amounts twice a day, particularly in later years, when people are more likely to succumb to various forms of cancer.
Another Area Where Toothpaste Will Fail You
Indirectly This Can Also Lead to Cancer
Although the toothpaste ingredients listed above is not a comprehensive list, it’s clear to see that manufacturers will add any chemical or poison, possibly in the belief that toothpaste isn’t swallowed.
Even if you rinse your mouth after brushing, small amounts of these poisons and chemicals will be ingested, and the cumulative effects could lead to serious health problems further down the road.
Some of the major toothpaste manufacturers claim they have added ingredients to combat gum disease.
While this sounds attractive in advertising blurb, the reality is that roughly 75% of the world’s adult population will suffer from gum disease at some point in their lives.
Clearly, the additives in modern toothpastes are simply not working against the dangers of gum disease.
Gum disease comes in many forms. The damage caused by Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease – to give Gum Disease its proper names – usually occur down underneath the gum line.
Apart from pain and discomfort, gum disease can eat away the jawbone and is one of the major causes of receding gums.
When gums recede, they invariably loosen their grip on your teeth. Once teeth become loose, they are in danger of falling out.
Similarly, painful teeth and gums and abscesses, are also symptoms of gum disease.
One Very Good Reason Why Your Dentist
Is Unable to Permanently Halt Your Gum Disease
Failure to deal effectively with gum disease means frequent and expensive visits to your dentist.
Although your dentist will be delighted to see you, as your gum disease potentially represents an excellent source of income, his/her surgical procedures will not be able to permanently cure your gum problems, which will ultimately return.
It has been well documented by scientists in the USA, UK and Australia, that gum disease is a primary cause of cancer, strokes and heart attacks.
At this point, you start to realise that regular toothpaste and your usual dental care regime is not working to your best advantage, to put it mildly.
